Where’s the Fruit?

What Fruits Are You Producing?

Do you know the feeling you get when you have that “ah-ha” moment? Where you finally clear the cob webs from the brain and things make so much more sense? I had one of those lately. And I’m titling it “WTF – Where’s the Fruit?”.

I use the word busy a lot. “I’m so busy” or “Too busy to worry about that right now” and my personal favorite “busy as a bee”. But what does it mean? Does busy mean productive? Am I showing any results from all this busy? In a word, no. I’m not producing the fruit. I’ve been raised around farming my whole life. I understand the cycle of growing things from seeds and the hard work it takes to produce them. I’ve seen my daddy plant a garden every year, vegetables and even watermelons a time or two. He would plant the watermelon seeds in the late spring and watch the vines begin to grow, curl, twirl and then the melons begin showing, bigger and bigger until he declared them ready to pick and eat. And I saw the work he put into growing them, the care and nurturing he did to create them. He didn’t just plant the seeds in the soil and proclaim “alright, grow…I’ve done my part”. Not even close.

The same can be said for anyone who has their own business. You can’t just toss your ideas out there or show a few products and think that’s all there is to it and now it will grow into some massive tower of profit. Nope, not gonna happen. If you want your own way in this world of business be prepared to be sitting in the middle of that melon patch, working 24/7 to try and grow that watermelon.

But back to busy. I came to the conclusion the other day that I am so busy that I am absolutely not getting anything really accomplished at all. Where are my fruits? It’s like I have so many fruit baskets I’m trying to fill all at the same time, that I’m not making a dent in getting enough fruit to make that fruit salad yet. In a creative, crafting community like ours, we are really guilty of stretching ourselves thin by dipping our hands into too many projects or ideas. And instead of having a few things be simply amazing to showcase or sell to other people, we have many mediocre things that just wind up being “okay” to fill the gaps. I think Joyce Meyers says it best…“Did you know there’s a difference between being busy and being fruitful? Did you ever stop to think that just being busy – running around in circles all day but not accomplishing anything – is the same as wasting your time? It’s frustrating to expend so much energy and time and not have any fruit from your effort!”.

Uhmmmm, I do believe the mic just dropped on that one. Meet my “ah-ha” moment. Brain explosion! Because this isn’t just about business. It’s about LIFE! I’m in the midst of standing still and viewing the fruits around me that I’ve produced so far. I want to keep those fruits and make more. Where are your fruits?
